Savannah’s City Council today named W. Brooks Stillwell as City Attorney. He succeeds James B. Blackburn, who is retiring after a distinguished career of over 40 years with the City.
Stillwell, a partner at HunterMaclean, will resign from the firm to accept his new position. He will maintain a limited private practice in addition to his work for the City.
Stillwell previously served for 17 years as an Alderman, and later as Mayor Pro Tem of Savannah, from 1978 to 1991. He has served as Chair of the Chatham County Board of Elections, and he currently is a Director, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Savannah Economic Development Authority and World Trade Center Savannah.
“I want to thank Mayor Edna Jackson and the members of City Council for giving me the opportunity to serve,” said Stillwell. “My life-long passion has been to work in the public policy arena for the improvement of the Savannah community. I have enjoyed working with my partners at HunterMaclean, and I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”
“We are grateful to Brooks for his 41 years at HunterMaclean, and we will certainly miss him,” said managing partner Frank S. Macgill. “We wish him the best in his new position, and are proud that he again has accepted the call of public service, a long tradition at this firm.”
Through the years, the Firm’s members have actively participated in professional, civic and charitable organizations and endeavors and many have offered service to the community. Malcolm Maclean served as Mayor of Savannah during the turbulent years of the 1960’s. E. Ormonde Hunter and Spencer Connerat served in the Georgia General Assembly. Walter G. Charlton, George Cann, and, most recently, Timothy Walmsley became Superior Court judges, and Sam Cann served as district attorney.
