On February 6, Savannah Country Day School’s Mock Trial Team won the regional mock trial competition, held at the Chatham County Courthouse. Savannah Country Day students earned top honors at the regional mock trial title for the fourth consecutive year.
The 2010 SCDS Mock Trial Team will head to the state championship tournament in Lawrenceville, Ga. on March 13 and 14. The state mock trial tournament is sponsored by the Georgia State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.
Savannah Country Day’s mock trial students work closely with teacher coaches Peter Foley and Ken Hincker and attorney coaches Dennis Keene, Colin McRae and Rachel Young of HunterMaclean to prepare for mock trial competitions.
Colin McRae, a partner at HunterMaclean in Savannah and Class of 1991 alumnus of SCDS, attributes the team’s success to hard work and dedication.
“We had an outstanding group of students this year,” he said. “They put in a lot of time and effort to get ready for the competition. I’m thrilled that they won the regional mock trial competition and I am sure they will represent the school well at the state level.”
Dennis Keene said that HunterMaclean attorneys enjoy their experience working with the school’s mock trial team. Keene began volunteering in the mock trial program in law school and jumped at the opportunity to volunteer again when he heard about the Savannah program.
“I think it’s a great experience for the kids,” he said. “It’s a wonderful program. It’s also good for community awareness to show students what the legal profession is all about.”
