The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education recently selected HunterMaclean partner Shawn A. Kachmar to join the board, which is devoted to promoting excellence at area public schools.
Kachmar fills the board seat left vacant when Georgia Governor Nathan Deal appointed Greg Sapp a state court judge. He will serve the remaining 18 months of Sapp’s term as the public school board’s 4th District representative.
Kachmar originally joined HunterMaclean in 2000 and currently serves as the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group Leader. His law practice focuses on employment law, employee benefits and business litigation.
“Shawn’s public service is a continuation of the best traditions of the law firm, such as Brooks Stillwell’s service as Savannah city alderman, Malcolm Maclean’s service as mayor of Savannah, and John Miller’s service as President of the school board” said Frank S. Macgill, managing partner of HunterMaclean.
An active community volunteer, Kachmar serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Savannah, the Savannah Downtown Business Association, the Olde Towne Homeowners Association and the school district’s ALL Foundation. He is the past Chairman of the Georgia Department of Labor’s Savannah Area Employers Committee and is also on the state-wide Georgia Employer Committee where he serves as the committee’s legislative liaison.
His children attend the local public school where he is a PTA volunteer and serves as the elected parent representative on the school council.
“I intend to work hard to continue the system’s recent successes, which have been accomplished through rigorous financial and academic accountability and increased educational options for all children within the system,” said Kachmar.
A successful litigator, Kachmar counsels employers on a variety of employment law compliance issues and has defended employers in administrative proceedings, mediations, arbitrations, individual suits and class and collective actions arising under various federal and state laws. He is admitted to the state bar in Georgia and South Carolina.
Kachmar earned a J.D. with distinction from the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta and a B.S. in Public Policy with high distinction from Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg, Penn.
A graduate of Leadership Savannah, Kachmar has been repeatedly honored as a Georgia Rising Star in Employment Litigation by Law & Politics and Atlanta Magazine and was named one of Savannah’s “40 Under 40” business leaders by the Savannah Business Report & Journal. He is also a graduate of Leadership Savannah.
