Matt Wilmot is a partner in HunterMaclean’s health care and corporate practice groups, representing a variety of health care organizations and providers.

He advises clients on regulatory and compliance matters, encompassing institutional compliance, fraud and abuse prevention, HIPAA regulations, EMTALA, the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law, licensure and accreditation, and physician contracting. Matt represents companies and individuals in the health care industry in sell-side and buy-side mergers and acquisitions and guides them through the health care industry specific considerations unique to their transaction. Additionally, Matt offers general counsel services to healthcare clients, managing their daily legal issues, contracting needs, medical staff matters, and corporate governance.

Matt also has significant experience in regulatory compliance, with a focus on white collar litigation. His practice involves conducting government and internal investigations for clients operating in health care, finance, education, and other tightly regulated sectors. Matt is skilled in defending clients against allegations under federal laws like the False Claims Act and equivalent state statutes. He also offers comprehensive services in conducting internal investigations, compliance assessments, and risk evaluations. His approach supports clients in navigating government inquiries and proactively enhancing operational effectiveness.

Matt previously served as the sole in-house counsel for a two-anchor hospital system with 700+ patient beds and as an attorney at Am Law 100 and 200 law firms specializing in representing clients in health care regulatory and compliance matters and government investigations. These experiences give him significant insight into the unique challenges and considerations faced by health care organizations and practitioners.

  • Defended a Georgia-based physician practice in a False Claims Act qui tam case filed in the Southern District of Georgia alleging violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law.
  • Represented genetic testing clinical trial laboratories in relation to federal government investigations regarding the medical necessity of testing ordered.
  • Represented a health care investment group in its acquisition and sale of assisted living facilities throughout the country.
  • Represented a health care business on its acquisition of birth centers in multiple states.
  • Represented a clinical trial research company in its joint ventures with medical practices and conduction of FDA-approved clinical trial studies.
  • Represented medical practices in responding to and appealing payor audit findings, including hearings in front of administrative law judges.
  • Assisted hospital in responding to alleged violations of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.
